An aside from the rigour of #photo101

A second response to the photo101 “weekend homework”
I came across this sculpture in a hollow in the park in the centre of Brussel close to the Palace.
Faded and run down but alluring…
This time some colour in my photos.
Le me know what you think and have a great weekend!
Now time for a glass of wine ๐
…footnote
After a little digging around on the web I have discovered that the statue is “La Madeleine repentante (1779) de Jรฉrรดme Duquesnoy repose dans une grotte artificielle dans le fond du parc.”
The woody hollow itself is a throwback to an ancient valley that predates the construction of the park. In September 1830 Dutch soldiers were trapped and defeated here by revolutionaries. The place was closed to the public throughout the second half of the 19th Century and even today has an eerie and unsettling atmosphere…
After a week, of “playing safe” and submitting shots from my archive to meet the daily themes, I decided it was time I “got with the program” and took some shots in direct response to the theme, this time the weekend “homework”.
So, armed with my wide angle lens, I took these shots from the balcony of my apartment in the heart of Brussel.
My goal? To experiment with composition and framing, vertical and horizontal, and to try to break free from my usual reluctance to “go wide”.
I plan to experiment more this weekend…
Would love to hear what you think?
In response to some of the feedack I received, I thought I would share the original colour images…

My second contribution to the WordPress Photography 101 course has been a challenge…
My photos here on belgianstreets and on belgradestreets tend to focus on details, the things we might miss as we go about our busy lives.
So, the challenge to capture an establishing shot put me out of my comfort zone. And that, I guess, is part of the appeal of Photography 101! ๐
Under time pressure today, I have chosen an existing photo which captures my neighborhood and the people who live here. Oh, and their obsession with cycling!
This wide city street in the heart of Brussel, jammed with cars during the week, was, on the day I took this shot, closed to all traffic except those on bicycles.
You can see the original post here car(e)free.

This is my first contribution to the WordPress Photography 101 challenge. Each day a different theme is presented to participants to help each of us learn and build.
The theme today, “Home”.
Where is it?
There are many definitions and opinions, physical, whimsical, sentimental, romantic, religious, philosophical.
Places, relationships, the people we love and care for.
Perhaps the real place we can call home is deep down inside ourselves, that part of us that makes us who we are. The place to which we return when we press our own virtual “home” button.
A part that is not shaped by the outside, by others.
A place where we can simply be.
Where we can close our eyes, shut out the noise and light and reflect.
Home.
